Job Description

Correctional Medical Care (CMC) has several openings for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) as a direct hire to work at Chesterfield County Correctional Facility. These available positions are Part-Time and Per Diem opportunities. All available shifts require 12 hours.

The following duties will be expected of the LPN:
  • 1. Provide direct patient care.
  • 2. Assist patients with ADLs as needed.
  • 3. Accurately collect data pertinent to health of inmate including lab specimens, etc. Administer PPD prior to inmate receiving a complete physical examination by the facility's qualified health professional.
  • 4. 'support patient sick call within the limits of licensure. Record history, vital signs and gathers other appropriate data for utilization during physician's sick call. Treat inmates with problems according to established policies and procedures and refer other medical problems to the appropriate clinician.
  • 5. Assist clinician with sick call or minor surgical procedures.
  • 6. Ensure physician/nursing orders are implemented. Use problem-oriented medical records system to chart using SOAP format.
  • 7. Assist with rounds in the infirmary (where appropriate), a minimum of once per shift and record nurse's notes on all inmates. Identify symptoms, reactions and progress of patients on a periodic basis; chart and report problems to supervisor.
  • 8. Administer medications, including injections.
  • 9. Maintain accountability, destroy and properly dispose of all needles and syringes.
  • 10. Be knowledgeable of infection control guidelines and use good universal technique.
  • 11. Implement procedures for patient transfers to medical facilities, outside health providers, or transfer within the correctional system.
  • 12. Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports as necessary.
  • 13. Participate in in-service education, obtaining at least 12 hours annually.

  • Graduate from a national or state approved school of vocational nursing.
  • Currently licensed to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Virginia State.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to apply principles of nursing care.
  • Recognition of signs and symptoms of mental illness, retardation, emotional disturbance or chemical dependency.
  • Demonstrate the ability to draw blood and administer PPD tests.
