Job Title: Medical Specialist
Full-Time/Part Time: Hourly Full-Time

The Medical Specialist performs donor physical screenings to determine suitability to donate plasma and provides medical care in the event of a donor reaction during the donation process. Operates within the scope of EU Guidance on Good Manufacturing Practice and FDA cGMP 21CFR.

Key Accountabilities
• Responsible for the evaluation of donor suitability for plasma donation. Suitability is determined through health assessments (hands on physicals), review of high risk flagged questionnaire responses and donor medical history questions. Consultation with Center Medical Director is available as needed.
• Educates donors and staff on donor suitability and medical related questions.
• Reviews and posts SPE test results and perform donor suitability evaluation every 4 months.
• Assists management in reviewing viral marker atypical test results as needed.
• Notifies donors of positive viral marker testing results (i.e. Hep-B, Hep-C, HIV, Syphilis, etc.).

• Provides treatment to donors who experience adverse reactions to the plasma donation procedure (i.e. Hypotensive Reaction, Citrate Reaction, Local Injury, Allergic Reaction, etc.). Professional emergency services will be contacted if medical treatment exceeds scope of individual license or ability.
• Promotes donor education of the plasma donation process to encourage a positive donor experience.
• Manages employee Hepatitis B Vaccine administration and other specialty immunization programs.
• May participate in center safety committee.

Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• EMT-A, Paramedic, LPN/LVN or RN license, accepted by state in work location.
• Current CPR certification required.
• Minimum one year of experience as a licensed professional in a healthcare environment preferred with consistent work history.
• Must be comfortable with repetitive duties performed in a clinical work environment and within standard operating procedures.
• Computer literacy in Electronic Medical Records or similar systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• Plasma center or blood bank industry experience preferred.

Physical and Mental Working Conditions
• Frequently performs work while walking or standing.
• Frequently exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Required to wear personal protective equipment.
• Ability to work flexible schedule (weekends, evenings, holidays) to meet production needs.
• Occasionally required to discuss sensitive health information with donors.
